Adam Waterston & Marion Brownlie

Adam Waterston was born on the 11th of November 1830 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He spent all of his early life in Hamilton. On the 1841 census he can be found living with his parents and his brothers and sisters in the Laigh (Low) Quarry. He's 10 years old but already following in his father's footsteps and training to become a hand loom weaver.
Adam married Marion Percy Brownlie in Hamilton on 13th of June 1852 and over the next seven years would have four children all born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.

James Waterston born the 5th of June 1853. He died of Kidney Failure aged 18 at Kirkton Street, Carluke on the 14th of July 1871

John Waterston born the 25th of April 1855. He married Mary Cole on the 1st of November 1878 in Wishaw, Lanarkshire. They had 4 children:

- Margaret Waterston born 30th May 1880 at Kirkwood, Wishaw, Lanarkshire. She married James Perry Costley in 1913 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.
- Adam Waterston born 13th January 1881 at Kirkwood, Wishaw, Lanarkshire
- James Waterston born 7th March 1883 at Kirkwood, Wishaw, Lanarkshire
- John Waterston born 2nd May 1886 at Kirkwood, Wishaw, Lanarkshire

Isabella Paton Waterston born the 7th of May 1857. She married William Hamilton in Carluke, Lanarkshire on 22nd of September 1880. They had five children:

- William Hamilton born 25th of October 1881 at Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He lived with the family at Green Street Boyd's Land, Bothwell and eventually immigrated to Canada where he met and married Frances Gelenaw in Thunder Bay, Canada on the 25th of June 1912. They returned to Bothwell to live at 39 Woodlands Crescent, Bothwell. William died at Kirkland's Mental Hospital, Bothwell, Scotland on the 6th of May 1931 from paralysis of the insane.

- Marion Percy Brownlie Hamilton born 26th of March 1883 at Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She married Walter Edwin Huggett at Bridgehouse, Bothwell on the 11th of December 1907. Walter died on the 12th of April 1947 at 38 Woodlands Crescent, Bothwell. Marion died in Bothwell on 12th September 1959. The couple had no children.

- Susan Walker Hamilton born 18th of September 1884 at Carnwath, Lanarkshire.
She lived at 38 Woodlands Crescent with her sister. Marian, who was a widow. Susan was a post mistress at Bothwell post office for years. She retired at the age of 65. The following year, in 1950, she married the retired Post man John Copeland Finlay. They lived happily at the above address. John died in Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1950. He was a postman. Susan died in Motherwell on 14th May 1968.

- Isabella Paton Hamilton born 1st of April 1886 at Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She married Allan Moffat on the 28th of November 1917 at Fairleigh Lodge, Bothwell. Lanarkshire. They had one daughter Isabella Waterston Moffat born Bothwell, Lanarkshire in 1923. She married James Campbell Corrance in Glasgow 1958.

- Adam Waterston Hamilton born 6th of May 1889 at Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland. In 1901 he lived with his parents and siblings at Fairleigh Stables, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Adams father was a domestic coachman and he decided to follow in his footsteps. He was a chauffeur to the Duke of Hamilton. He joined the Army during World War I and served from 1914 - 1920. He married Caroline Wilkie at 19 Howard Street, Glasgow on the 17th of April 1920.

- Elizabeth Wilkie Hamilton born 31 Paterson Street, Glasgow on the 27th of February 1921. She married John Armit (Jack) Winchester at The Manse, Kirk Street, Campbeltown, Scotland on the 7th of February 1941. He was a commercial clerk she was a shorthand typist. They had two children:
- Elizabeth Winchester born 1942. She married Eric Pitt and had three sons Keith, Eric and Kenneth.
- Ian Winchester born 1945 in Lanarkshire, Scotland

Caroline Pegg (nee Hamilton)

Caroline married Norman Rodney Pegg on the 16th of december 1942 in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. He was born on the 7th of June 1920 in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, the son of Samuel James Pegg and Laura Pegg (nee Gamble). Caroline and Norman had three children:

- Sonia Patricia Pegg born the 28th of July 1946 in Bellshill, Lanarkshire

- Roland Rodney Pegg born the 16th of August 1947 in Swadlincote, Burton on Trent.
He married Margaret Venning and have two children Richard Andrew Pegg born 1977 and Sarah Elizabeth Pegg.

- Stuart Hamilton Pegg. Born and died in 1959.

- Isabella (Bunty) Hamilton born in Bothwell in 1924. She died at 39 Woodlands Crescent, Bothwell, Lanarkshire on March the 11th 1944. She never married.

- William Noel Hamilton born Bothwell in 1932. He married Margaret Murphy in Liverpool, England in 1932. They had two son, both born in Liverpool. Gordon N Hamilton born 1959 and Derek J Hamilton born 1964.

Jane Waterston born the 28th of May 1859. She died aged 5 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 15th June 1864.

The couple then moved to Peasebanks Cottage, Townhead Street, Hamilton. By 1861 Adam is Dairy Man to the Duke of Hamilton.

Adam Waterston born the 16th May 1862. He died of croup on the 9th of December 1867 aged 5 years.
Marion Waterston born the 19th May 1864. She died of croup on the 7th of December 1867 aged 3 and 1/2 years.
​
Croup was a common killer of children under 6 in the late 1800's. Often triggered by a virus such as the common cold, croup in younger children created a cough that was described as a seal-like bark. Croup caused swelling of the larynx, or voice box, and the trachea, and its clinical name was laryngotracheitis. The inflammation affected a child’s voice and ability to breathe.

The family then move from Hamilton to Carluke, Lanarkshire and further children are born

Peter Waterston born the 18th of October 1866. He also died of croup, like his siblings Adam and Marion. He died aged 13 months on the 27th of November 1867 in Carluke , Lanarkshire. His father signed the death certificate.

Jane (Jeanie) Waterston born the 21st of October 1868. She married Thomas Aitchman at Bridge House, Bothwell on the 16th of December 1894. Thomas Aitchman was the son of Alexander & Isabella Aitchman. He was born on the 3rd of November 1868 at 1 Miller Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. At the time of the wedding his parents lived at 11 Portland Place, Hamilton. They had two children:

- Alexander (Alex) Aitchman born the 8th of May 1895 at Quarry Place in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He never married and died of a heart attack aged 62 at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1957.

- Marion Percy Brownlie Aitchman born 3rd of September 1897 in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. She married George Dymock in Bothwell in 1928. She died in Bellshill, Lanarkshire in 1985.
​
Marion Waterston born the 28th of June 1871. She was the second daughter of the couple to be named Marion. She died aged 3 from diphtheria on the 6th of September 1873 in Carluke, Lanarkshire.
​
Margaret (Maggie) Waterston born the 11th of November 1873. She married Hugh Easton at 28 Miller Street on the 25th of February 1903. Hugh was the son of John and Jemima Easton. He was born in Auchinleck, East Ayrshire on the 12th of June 1867. Prior to marrying Maggie he lived at 30 Hope Street, Lanark and was a Police Constable. He was a widower. His previous wife Grace Frew had died n 1901.

Adam and Marion remained in Carluke for some time before moving back to Hamilton, Lanarkshire to enjoy their old age together. They were living at 28, Miller Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland by 1901.
​
Adam Waterston died aged 71 at 28, Miller Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 3rd of August 1902. Marion died 18th of May 1911. She was 79.
