James was born in St Cuthbert's, Midlothian, Scotland on the 22nd of May 1625.  Christian was born in Cannongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland on the 7th of May 1626. The couple began married life living in Hamilton, Lanarkshire but then moved to Douglas, Lanarkshire.

They had one known son, John Haddow (my ancestor), who was born in the village of Douglas, Lanarkshire in 1675. He spent most of his life in Douglas, however the family never abandoned their ties to Hamilton, often visiting on occasions for summer holidays.

John Haddow married Isobelle Muir in Douglas, Lanarkshire circa 1700.

They had 7 Children:

1. John Haddow born on 14 March 1701 in Douglas, Lanarkshire. He died as an infant.

2. John Haddow II born on 19 April 1702 in Douglas, Lanarkshire. He married Jean Thomson in Douglas in June 1718. He was 16 years old at the time and she was 17 years old. From the early middle ages, girls could get married from the age of just 12 - and boys could be 14. That became important when the law changed in England in the 18th century. Under the 1753 Marriage Act, anyone under 21 needed their parental permission to wed. This didn't apply in Scotland though - and that meant young couples came over the border to places like Gretna and Coldstream to get married.

He met Sir Walter Scott when he visited Douglas in 1831 to collect background material for his final novel ' Castle Dangerous'. Haddow cannot have been flattered to find he had inspired the character of the old sexton Lazarus Powheid. In honour of his services to the village a Memorial Stone was erected marking his death in 1849. He lies in the old churchyard buried with his wife and many of his children.
