John Mulholland was born in 1861 in Loughgall and Tartaraghan, Armagh, Ireland the son of William Mulholland and Mary Quin. He is the brother of my great, great grandmother Mary Ann Heaney (nee Mulholland). He was baptised on the 10th of November 1861 at the Roman Catholic Parish, Loughgall and Tartaraghan, Armagh.

He married Eliza Jackson in the late 1870's and they had one son:

​

- Samuel Jackson (Sam) Mulholland born 1880 in Armagh. After his mothers death Sam came to Glasgow with his father. He was raised in the Tradeston area of the city and gained a stepmother when his father married Jane Donaldson in 1886. He was only six years at he time of the marriage, so it's likely that he saw Jane as his mother. He began working as an Iron molder (journeyman) and in 1900 he married Agnes Jane (Jeanie) Dunlop. The couple were married at 21 Abbotsford Place in Glasgow on the 31st of August 1900. He was 20 years old and living on Francis Street and Jeanie was 19 and living with her parents, Thomas Dunlop and Isabella Dunlop (nee McMillan) at 4 Ritchie Street, Glasgow. The Reverend McCreath occupied an apartment in the tenement property at 21 Abbotsford Place. People could be married in a Vestry or in the Manse and wherever the minister lived. There are many other references to couples being married at 21 Abbotsford Place and at other addresses that were not churches.

Sam and Jeanie lived at 57 Cavandish Street, Tradston, Glasgow and had eight children:

- Isabella (Bella) Mulholland born 1901. Isabella never married. She worked as a bottle labeler and died aged 25 from consumption at 315 Eglington Street, Glasgow on the 7th of January 1926. She had been a witness at her brother Sam's wedding the year prior.

​

- Samuel (Sam) Mulholland born 1903. He worked as a bonded store (warehouse) laborer when he married a pregnant Catherine Anderson on the 2nd of January 1925 at  11 May Terrace, Cathcart, Glasgow. They had one daughter:

Isabella Dunlop Mulholland born in 1925 in the Gorbals, Glasgow who married James McEwan Frame in Provan, Easterhouse, Glasgow in 1948 and died in 2019.

​

Sam and Catherine moved to 21 Langdale Street, Stepps, Glasgow and were still there in 1940. Sam died of consumption aged 38 at Robroyston Hospital, Glasgow on the 18th of September 1941. Catherine Mulholland (nee Anderson) died in Glasgow in 1976.

- Agnes Jane (Jeanie) Mulholland born on the 13th of May 1904. She died of consumption on the 4th of November 1926 at the family home, 315 Eglington Street, Glasgow.

​

- William John Mulholland born 1907. William died, aged 14, at the family home, 315 Eglington Street, Glasgow from consumption on the 7th of January 1921.

​

- Thomas Mulholland born 1909. Thomas never married and worked as a Saw Mill laborer. He was removed from the family home and taken to Knightwood Hospital, Glasgow on the 11th of February 1932 where he died of consumption.

​

- James Mulholland born 1913. James married Harriet Kane at Renwick Church, Cumberland Street, Gorbals, Glasgow on the 23rd of February 1934. He was 21 and she was 23 - The daughter of Peter Kane and Elizabeth Kane (nee Murphy). They had three children:

- Thomas Mulholland born 1935

- Mary Kane Dunlop Mulholland born 1937. She married Alexander Martin Murphy in Provan, Easterhouse, Glasgow in 1956.

- Alexander Mulholland born 1944

- Alexander Dunlop Mulholland born 1916. He married Elizabeth Frazer Moffat on the 16th of April 1940 at Barony North Church, Glasgow. She was living with her parents at the time - James Moffat and Margaret Wallace Moffat (nee Parker) at 1473 Pollockshaws Road, Glasgow.

They had one son:

- William Morgan Mulholland born 1942.

- Joseph Mulholland born 1918. He married Catherine Halliday at Barony North Church, Glasgow on the 27th of September 1940

They had one son:

It's said that Eliza Mulholland (nee Jackson) died in childbirth but I have never been able to find a death certificate for her. 

​

John married Jane Donaldson in Tradeston, Glasgow on the 19th of August 1886 and they moved into 11 Francis Street, Govan, Tradeston, Glasgow. He worked for the Glasgow Cleansing Department as a Labourer.

​

Their children were:

- William Mulholland born at 11 Francis Street, Glasgow on the 18th of December 1887. He died at the same address the following year.

​

- James Mulholland born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire on the 3rd of January 1889. He never married and lived with his parents until their deaths. He died at Robroyston Hospital,  Glasgow from consumption on the 1st of August 1958 aged 69. He's buried in the Eastwood Cemetery, Glasgow

​

- Joseph Mulholland born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire in 1891. He married Margaret McVey at the Eastwood Manse, Renfrewshire on the 29th of September 1920.

They lived at 86 Caledonia Road, Glasgow and had two children:

- Margaret Mulholland born in 1925

- William Mulholland born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire on the 22nd of March 1893. He married Janet (Jenny) Geddes at 1 Kingsby Avenue, Glasgow on the 17th of July 1914. He was 21 years old and a cleansing department laborer ad she was 17 (she was 16) and a confectionary sales woman.

They had four children:

- Sarah Martin Mulholland born in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanarkshire on the 14th of January 1915. She married Edward Carey in the Gorbals, Glasgow in 1937.

- Janet Geddes Carey born Cathcart, Glasgow in 1940. She married Alexander Hain in Glasgow in 1965.They had 2 daughters:

- Sandra (Sandy) Hain. She married Ian Henry

- Joyce Hain. She married Antony (Tony) Gormley

- Helen Geddes Carey. Helen first married Allan Mullen in Glasgow in 1967. They had five children:

Helen secondly married Robert Bryson Marshall in Glasgow in 1983. She thirdly married Marquis O'Connell in 1993.

- John Mulholland born in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanarkshire in 1916. He married Annie (Nan) Cottingham in the Gorbals, Glasgow in 1940. They had three children:

- Janet Geddes Mulholland born in 1949 in the Gorbals, Glasgow. She married John Redmond in 1970.

- Thomas Geddes Mulholland born in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanarkshire in 1918. He was living at 230 Thistle Street, Glasgow when he married Mary Donnelly at St Augustine Church, Glasgow on the 29th of December 1939. He was 21 and she was 19 and the daughter of John Donnelly and Ellen Donnelly (nee Mochan)

- Jane (Jean) Mulholland born in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanarkshire in 1925. Jean married Thomas Douglas Cryans in the Gorbals, Glasgow in 1943.

- Martin Cryans born in Glasgow in 1945

William Mulholland died in Glasgow on the 16th of May 1974. He was 81 years old. Jenny Mulholland (nee Geddes) died on the 13th of August 1986. She was 88.

- Annie Mulholland born at 11 Francis Street, Glasgow in 1895. On the 1911 census she's living at 28 Lilybank Street. Abbotsford, Kingston, Pollokshields, Glasgow age 16. No further history recorded.

​

- Mary Jane Mulholland born at 11 Francis Street, Glasgow on the 18th of November 1897. She married David Allan Bryson at 31 Maxwell Drive, Pollokshields, Glasgow on the 12th of September 1924.

​

They had one son :

- David Allan Bryson born in 1927

- John Mulholland born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire in April 1900. He died in September 1900.

​

- Elizabeth (Eliza/Lizzie) Mulholland born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire in 1902

- John Mulholland born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire in 1904. He married Marion Gold at Hutchinsontown, Glasgow on the 12th of July 1934. Marion died on the 4th of March 1951 at the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. She was 45 years old. John died in 1972.

- Sarah Mulholland born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire in 1907. She married William Ferguson Milligan at Pollokshields, Glasgow in 1926.

Sarah and William had two children:

- Peter Cameron Milligan born 1930. He married Helen Simpson Forsyth in Tradeston, Glasgow in 1957

- Jane Mulholland Milligan born 1933. She married William Stewart Minty in Pollock, Glasgow in 1952. They had two sons:

- Alexander Stewart Minty born 1957

​

By 1911 John, Jane and their family are living at 28 Lilybank Street, Abbotsford, Kingston, Pollokshields, Glasgow.

​

John Mulholland died at the Victoria Royal Infirmary Hospital on the 27th of February 1912 from Bulbar Paralysis. A condition that occurs due to damage to the lower cranial nerves. Clinical features of bulbar paralyis range from difficulty swallowing and a lack of a gag reflex to inability to articulate words and excessive drooling. Bulbar palsy is most commonly caused by a brainstem stroke or tumor. He was 51 years old. Jane Mulholland (nee Donaldson) lived to the age of 69. She died in Glasgow on the 25th of November 1937.
