The Bent Cemetery,
Hamilton,Lanarkshire, Scotland
Unsurprisingly a great number of our ancestors are buried in this Cemetery. The Bent Cemetery was developed by a private company and opened in 1853. The local council acquired the cemetery in 1958 and developed various extensions - the latest extension was opened in 2005.
It is the last resting place of Lord Hamilton, The 1st Marquis of Hamilton and the 8th, 9th and 10th Dukes of Hamilton and their families after subsidence and flooding from the River Clyde affected the Hamilton Mausoleum. The 10th Duke was interred in an Egyptian sarcophagus of the Ptolemaic period.
Other notable people interred here are entertainer Sir Harry Lauder, parents of explorer David Livingston and more recently, the footballer Davie Cooper.

Cremated remains may also be interred or scattered within a lair in the cemetery.

Records dating back to 1853 are available. If any of our family were coming to Scotland to do any research a visit to the cemetery would be essential.

Here is a list of many of our relatives buried in the cemetery - There will no doubt be more that have yet to be recorded on our family tree.

Due to privacy rules, burials from 1949 onwards aren’t in the public domain so from 1949 onwards people have been added to the list simply because I know they are there. Some haven’t actually been buried there, as the current family tradition in Hamilton favors cremation over burial, however their ashes are there or they have been mentioned on a headstone in remembrance.

Also its worth noting that the original cemetery in Hamilton, at the old Relief Congregation Church (Next to the Town Hall) which existed in the early 1800’s was excavated in 1964 and all of the bodies exhumed and reburied on common ground at the Bent Cemetery – 2 known relatives who were reburied were Margaret Harris Strachan Martin and her second husband Robert Martin.

There are several specific graves of interest here. They are detailed in the plans below. I've also provided information on each head stone and who is buried in each layer.
